OTC treatment

There are several over-the-counter (OTC) treatments that can help to relieve the symptoms of dry eye. Some options include:

  • Artificial tears: These are lubricating eye drops that can help to moisturize and soothe dry, irritated eyes.

  • Gels and ointments: These are thicker lubricants that can be applied to the eye to provide longer-lasting relief from dryness. They can be used at bedtime to help keep the eyes moisturized while you sleep.

  • Warm compresses: Applying a warm compress to your closed eyes can help to unblock oil glands and improve tear production

  • Lid hygiene: Keeping your eyelids clean and free of debris can help to prevent dry eye symptoms. This can be done by gently scrubbing your eyelids with a warm, wet washcloth.

  • Omega-3 supplements: These supplements, which are taken orally, may help to improve the quality of the tears produced by the eye.

It is important to speak with your doctor before using any OTC dry eye treatments, as some of them may not be suitable for certain people or may interact with other medications you are taking.
